Hamilton County Builds Massive Elementary Schools

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Hamilton County in Tennessee is opening some massive elementary schools to keep pace with its growing student population.

The first to open was the 1,100-student Ooltewah Elementary School in August 2013. When the $19.5 million school opened, it was the largest elementary school in the district. East Brainerd Elementary School will debut this August with the same 1,100-student capacity.

Oregon State University Targets Construction Safety

CORVALLIS, Ore. — The College of Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU) in Corvallis is developing a facility geared toward improving safety for both construction workers and the general public.

A $1 million grant to the college from Knife River Corporation and MDU Construction Services Group, both headquartered in Bismarck, N.D., will help establish the MDU Resources Group Construction Safety Laboratory. The lab will replicate real-world jobsites and simulate worker activity to examine potential hazards.

Long Island Voters Support School Improvements

SHOREHAM, N.Y. — A $33.5 million bond initiative to fund infrastructure improvements and renovations throughout the Shoreham-Wading River Central School District passed in March, paving the way for a variety of upgrades. The project, dubbed the “Renewal Project,” will cost an estimated $48.5 million. State funding will cover the $15 million difference.

The 2,400-student district contracted BBS Architects, Landscape Architects and Engineers of Patchogue, N.Y., to provide architecture, interior design, mechanical, electrical and engineering services.
