Catawba College Makes Good on Climate Commitment

SALISBURY, N.C. — Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. is embarking on a landmark solar energy project. When completed, the school’s new photovoltaic installation will be the largest solar energy project in the southeastern U.S., contributing to Catawba’s Green Step Initiative, which aims to achieve campus-wide carbon neutrality by 2030. Work on the project officially began in January and will be fully implemented later this spring.

The lab finally gives students and medical providers the technology and space they need for critical training, expanding the lab’s square footage from a cramped 1,800-square-foot room to a 15,000-square-foot center.

Auburn University OKs Largest Scoreboard

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn University sports fans won’t be able to ignore the scoreboard come football season this fall. The university’s Board of Trustees recently approved construction of a 200-foot-wide scoreboard—the biggest in college football.

The scoreboard will cost an estimated $13.9 million to build and will measure 200-feet wide by 105-feet tall. The video board will take up roughly 10,830 square feet, more than Texas A&M’s recently installed 7,661-square-foot video board, currently the largest in college football.

SAN ANTONIO — The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Department of Construction Science (part of the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning) opened a new multipurpose teaching and research facility, funded by a donation from locally based Bartlett Cocke General Contractors. The new Bartlett Cocke General Contractors Teaching and Research Laboratory will give students the tools to learn virtual design and construction techniques in a classroom setting.

Michigan OKs Biomedical Research Facility Construction

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Michigan State University (MSU) Board of Trustees approved the construction of the Grand Rapids Research Center, a biomedical research facility, on Feb. 6. The board also approved a project budget of $85 million, even though the Grand Rapids Brownfield Redevelopment Authority has estimated that the building will cost $88.1 million, reported .
