STAFFORD, Texas鈥擜fter years in the planning, the time has come to reap the benefits of the Stafford Municipal School District鈥檚 (SMSD) new agriculture building. The half-decade-long dream became a reality recently as part of a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the new building, which is located at 1001 Constitution Ave.

The $1 million, 3,000-square-foot agricultural building, designed by Smith & Company Architects, will teach students how to raise and care for farm animals. The high school students will then take said animals to competitions such as the Fort Bend County Fair and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

As designed by Smith & Company, the agricultural building consists of concrete blocks topped with a metallic roof. The building contains stalls for animal care, office space, grazing areas for the cattle, as well as fans to keep the animals cool in Lone Star State heat. At these and other areas inside the building, students will take courses in not just agriculture and horticulture but also in natural resources and food management. Additionally, elementary and middle school students within SMSD will be able to observe farm animal husbandry being practiced by high school students.

The new agricultural campus replaced an older barn that stood on the same site, and which featured adjacent yards. Both the building and the yards needed to be demolished to make way for a campus access road.

Via a poll of students, the street adjacent to the new building is to be renamed Barnyard Boulevard, which was approved by the SMSD Board of Trustees.

Project manager of the new agricultural building was Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN). Victor Fleming, program manager for LAN, said that the agricultural building will be a boon to students as well as the community.

鈥淭he new facility is great for the District鈥檚 Agricultural Science program and our community,鈥 Fleming said in a recent statement. 鈥淚t will allow students the opportunity to apply skills and concepts they are learning in the classroom in a real-world setting.鈥

Added SMSD Superintendent Dr. Robert Bostic: 鈥淚t鈥檚 a gift and reality to have an expanded and upgraded building. This is truly a benefit for our students.鈥

Deborah Nordt, SMSD鈥檚 director of college and career, said that agricultural programs allow students to develop patience and responsibility that can be translated later into the job market.

鈥淚n addition to feeding and caring for animals, through Animal Science projects, students learn about animal health, nutrition, and physiology,鈥 she said.

In a follow-up statement emailed to 糖心少女, LAN Vice President JP Grom said, 鈥淥ne of things that was always top of mind during construction was that work was being completed on an occupied campus. As always, work had to be done safely and efficiently鈥攖he facility also had to be restored quickly so students could move their project animals back to showcase them.鈥

LAN, which is based in Houston, falls under the umbrella of the LEO A DALY banner, and employs over 300 people throughout the United States. LAN has several times been ranked as one of the 鈥淭op 100 A/E Firms鈥 by Engineering News-Record.

STAFFORD, Texas鈥擲tafford Municipal School District (SMSD), the only municipal school district in Texas, is on schedule to open its new facilities for middle school and administration this month.

The new facilities are being constructed as part of SMSD鈥檚 $62 million bond program that passed in late 2017. The bond program provided funds to address growth and expansion at SMSD, which enrolled approximately 3,600 students in the 2019-20 school year.

鈥淲e are thrilled with our new space,鈥 said SMSD Superintendent Dr. Robert Bostic in a statement. 鈥淲e can鈥檛 wait for staff, students and the community to see the final result and enjoy the renovations of our complex in person one day soon.鈥

The new $26 million middle school will accommodate 950 students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade. The three-story building, encompassing 139,360 square feet, includes 21st century classrooms, science laboratories, robotics, engineering and computer labs, band and two art rooms, fitness room, library, two gymnasiums and a cafetorium. The existing middle school was built in 1983 during the district鈥檚 inception.

The new two-story, 26,362-square-foot administrative building includes office areas, training and conferences rooms, and a board room for meetings. The $6.9 million facility includes a district memorabilia area where there will also be a 3D model of the complex installed. Both buildings were designed by AutoArch Architects and are being constructed by Drymalla Construction.

鈥淭he new facilities are aesthetically appealing and offer unique instructional opportunities for Stafford MSD students,鈥 explained JP Grom, vice president at聽Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam,

the firm serving as the program manager for the bond program.

Other elements of the bond program include converting the existing middle school into a new Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) magnet school for grades 3 to 8 that will open in 2021-22鈥攖he only one of its kind in Fort Bend County, a repurposed community center in place of the former administration building, a new outdoor educational plaza, converting the former intermediate school into an early childhood center, and renovation of the existing elementary and high schools.
