The Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System last week votedunanimously to appoint Susan Ballabina, Ph.D.,as 28th president of Texas A&M University.Ballabina assumedher new role on May 11, building onmore than three decades of service to Texas A&M and the State of Texas.

Ballabinapreviouslyservedas Executive Vice Chancellor of The Texas A&M University System, where she helped lead systemwide operations, advance strategic initiatives and support the work of the A&M System’s universities and agencies across Texas.

Throughout her career,Ballabinahas held senior leadership roles spanning the university and the A&M System, including Chief of Staff to the president, Senior Vice President for Academic and Strategic Collaborations, and Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer for Texas A&M AgriLife. Her work has included strengthening statewide programs, building partnerships, supporting research and educational initiatives, and coordinating large-scale efforts such as the Healthy South Texas initiative and the disaster recovery following Hurricane Harvey.

“Texas A&M has a strong foundation, a clear mission, and passionate faculty, staff, students, and former students who care deeply about its future,”Ballabinasaidin a statement.“I’m grateful for the trust placed in me by the regents and Chancellor Hegar, and I look forward to working alongside the Aggie community to build on that strength and move the university forward.”

The Boldt Company recently announced the promotion of Jason Hale to Design Group Manager. In this new role, Hale is accountable for overall operations of the Architecture and Engineering team, including profit and loss performance, business plan development and setting a clear vision to drive sustained success. Previously, Hale served as Director of Architecture and Design for the group. In his new role, he focuses on business development and management of strong relationships with both internal and external customers while overseeing business operations, design services and team members. Hale has been with The Boldt Company since 2024 and previously served as the Director of Architecture and Design. He holds a Bachelor of Science in architectural studies from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

HCM has added Erika Ashauer, ALEP, EDAC, as a Human Experience Research Lead in the firm’s PK-12 studio, bringing deep expertise at the intersection of cognitive science, design research and PK-12 educational environments.

Ashauer joins HCM with a background in applied research, learning sciences, ethnographic inquiry and evidence-based design. She has spent her career embedding research directly into design workflows, translating insights about attention, regulation, memory, and social context into actionable strategies to drive more intentional, aligned, human-integrated outcomes. Her recent work includes pre- and post-occupancy studies, participatory design facilitation, multilingual community engagement, and the creation of research to design frameworks that enhance practice-wide accountability and shared understanding.

“Erika brings a rare combination of cognitive neuroscience rigor and human experience perspective to impact and improve the design of our PK-12 spaces,” said Adele Willson, PK-12 Studio Leader, in a statement. “Her approach not only deepens our research capabilities but strengthens our ability to create environments that truly support the cognitive, emotional, and social needs of learners and educators.”

Ashauer holds a bachelor’s degree in cognitive science, neuroscience and psychology from the University of California, San Diego. She is an Accredited Learning Environment Planner (ALEP), holds Evidence-Based Design Accreditation and Certification (EDAC) and is certified in Emotional Intelligence Coaching.

Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has officially welcomed Dr. Brendan B. Kelly as its 24th president, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the 177‑year‑old institution. Kelly, a two‑time EMU graduate and nationally recognized higher education leader, assumes the presidency following his service as president-elect beginning March 1. His appointment follows the retirement of President James Smith afternearly adecade of service.

Kelly arrives with a distinguished record of leadership across multiple universities, including service as president of the Arkansas State University System, president of the University of West Georgia, appointment as interim president of the University of South Carolina, and chancellor of University of South Carolina Upstate. His career has been defined by student-centered innovation, financial stewardship, and community partnership-building.

In remarks on his first day, Kelly emphasized the urgency, optimism and forward momentum that will define his presidency.

“This work is personal to me,” Kelly said. “Eastern Michigan University shaped my life – first as a student, then as a scholar, and now as a leader. Today is not justa beginning;it’sa call to action. Wedon’thave a minute to waste. Our students are counting on us, our communities are counting on us, and the state of Michigan is counting onus.”

Kellyearned both his bachelor’s degree in public relations andmaster’sdegree in communication from EMU before completing his Ph.D. in political communication and rhetoric at Wayne State University.

The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) announced that Starling Johnson, Vice President of Sales at Johnson Concrete Products, has assumed the role of Chair of the CMHA Board of Directors.

Johnson is the first woman to serve as chair of a national trade associationrepresentingthe producers of concrete masonry units, going back to theinceptionof the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) in 1918. Johnson has been an active CMHA leader, serving on the Board of Directors, the ExecutiveCommitteeand multiple committees, including leadership development initiatives that help cultivate the next generation of industry volunteers.During her year as chair, her priorities include advancing CMHA’s next strategic planning cycle, expanding year-round contractor engagement through Hardscape North America, strengthening coordination with state associations and other industry organizations, and continuing to advance advocacy efforts and building codes work.

LPA Design Studioshas welcomedLawrence Speck—a respected architect,educatorand leader—as a Senior Designer inthefirm’s Austin office. Speck’sdeep involvement in Austin’s transformation, combined with his current role at UT Austin educating the next generation of designers, brings a unique perspective to LPA.

Over the past 25 years, Speck’s work has earned more than 120 design awards, including 30+ from the American Institute of Architects. As an educator, he has received more than 40 teaching and service honors, including the AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion, the highest recognition in North America for excellence in architectural education. He has taught at M.I.T., the University of Western Australia and the University of Texas at Austin, where helped found the Center for American Architecture and Design, before serving as Dean for the School of Architecture from 1992 – 2001. Speck is also an AIA Fellow and served as chair of the jury to select fellows in 2005.
