FORT WORTH, Texas 鈥 The University of Texas at Arlington will partner with global interdisciplinary architecture firm HKS and national general contracting and design-build firm Hensel Phelps to develop the first facility for the University system鈥檚 new UTA West campus.

The University of Texas at Arlington鈥攁 public research university in the growing Dallas-Fort Worth area鈥攈as a student body of more than 41,000, making it the second-largest institution in the University of Texas System. Located in west Fort Worth, UTA West will focus on meeting future educational needs and fostering economic development in the fast-growing region.

鈥淭he boldest dreams need a visionary and ambitious team if they are to be realized,鈥 UTA President Jennifer Cowley said in a statement. 鈥淏etween HKS, Hensel Phelps, and UTA, the team we have assembled will ensure UTA West鈥檚 development aligns with our strategic plan, supporting our mission of excellence in education, research and community engagement.鈥

The project team was announced on April 18 and was selected through a competitive process. HKS鈥 and Hensel Phelps鈥 focus on sustainable, innovative design and construction were well-aligned with UTA鈥檚 mission to create spaces that empower students and strengthen community connections, according to a statement by the university.

John Hall, UTA vice president for administration and economic development, noted in a statement that it was important that the university appoint a design-build team that would respect the natural beauty of the site, establish design standards that would guide future development, and bring proven experience to successfully execute the program and construction documents.

鈥淗KS and Hensel Phelps is certainly that team,鈥 Hall said.

Work on Phase I will begin soon, focusing on developing a primary identity for the campus driven by a landmark building and public space that embraces the surrounding natural environment.

鈥淭he needs of students and faculty are shifting at an ever-accelerating pace,鈥 said Leonardo Gonzalez Sangri, global practice director, education, and partner at HKS, in a statement. 鈥淧reparing for careers that we can鈥檛 yet fully anticipate demands a careful and purposeful approach. We are excited to bring decades of expertise, a passion for innovation and our evidence-based and research-informed approach to collaborate with The University of Texas at Arlington in creating a new campus that meets this challenge and sets a standard for the future of education.鈥

To date, Hensel Phelps has delivered more than $5 billion in higher education projects, while focusing on safety, quality, schedule and budget control, according to Michael Orlowski, operations manager with Hensel Phelps. This includes numerous projects with The University of Texas System over the last 40 years, providing design-build and construction manager-at-risk services at multiple campuses, including UT Arlington. In total, Hensel Phelps has delivered 46 projects worth over $3 billion, spanning more than 12 million square feet for the System.

鈥淥ur years of higher education experience, combined with this attention to client satisfaction, have helped us establish best practices related to campus safety and communication, meeting schedules to align with campus events and engaging multiple stakeholders,鈥 Orlowski said in a statement.

A ceremonial groundbreaking for the new campus took place on April 3, and infrastructure installation will begin later this year. More significant development will commence in 2026, and the new campus should welcome its first students as early as fall 2028 and will eventually aim to serve more than 10,000 students.

SAN DIEGO鈥擳he UC San Diego Nuevo East Graduate Student Housing has been awarded the Design-Build Institute of America鈥檚 (DBIA) National Award of Merit in the Educational Facilities category. The award recognizes such players in the project as Latitude 33 Planning & Engineering; the UCSD project represents Latitude 33鈥檚 fourth DBIA Award in five years.

UCSD鈥檚 Nuevo East Graduate Student Housing is a $220-million development encompassing 712,000 square feet of living space for 1,300 students. The complex entails five middle- and high-rise buildings with student housing options ranging from one- to four-bedroom townhouses and apartments. Another building within the complex, called the Exchange, offers study space, fitness areas and meeting rooms. On the exterior, communal gardens and public gathering areas are meant to stoke a sense of community.

Hensel Phelps served as the project鈥檚 general contractor, which realized architect Mithun鈥檚 designs in conjunction with Latitude 33 Planning & Engineering. The Nuevo East Graduate Student Housing also met the school鈥檚 sustainability goals and secured USGBC LEED Gold certification.

Latitude 33鈥檚 duties on the job included design survey, civil engineering services as well as construction support and administration.

鈥淐ongratulations to UC San Diego, Hensel Phelps, Mithun, and the entire team for developing these highly successful graduate student residences,鈥 said Kyle Boyce, Associate at Latitude 33 Planning & Engineering. 鈥淭hese homes were designed and built with meticulous intentionality鈥攊ncluding the pedestrian flow, the neighborhood connections, the spaces to facilitate resident interaction, and the sustainability initiatives, to name a few.

鈥淎s a world-class university, these homes are a fantastic addition to UC San Diego鈥檚 offerings.鈥

The DBIA National Awards recognize design-build projects that apply industry best practices. Projects must be completed within budget, on time and without any attendant litigation in order to be eligible for nomination. A panel of industry experts then judges the projects for awards consideration.

RIVERSIDE, Calif.鈥擳he University of California Regents board has approved the Riverside campus鈥檚 new $84 million Education Building II project for UCR鈥檚 School of Medicine.

Following a design-build competition, the University of California Regents鈥攊n concert with the UCR Office of Planning, Design, and Construction鈥攕elected the design-build team of Hensel Phelps and CO Architects for the construction project. Both firms are headquartered in Southern California.

Included in the education building plan are an outdoor plaza that will give the School of Medicine its own unique identity. Solar panels and state-of-the-art thermally insulating materials will help reduce the building鈥檚 environmental impact. Due to its sustainable design, the Education Building II facility has been certified LEED Platinum.

In a recent statement, Eric Bain, Hensel Phelps鈥 operations manager for the project, said that his firm is excited to be back at UC Riverside. Hensel Phelps previously worked on the campus鈥檚 Multidisciplinary Research Building, which won a National Award of Merit in the category Industrial, Process and Research Facilities.

鈥淎t the core of our design and construction efforts is the desire to support, promote, and advance the campus鈥檚 vision to create an inclusive and innovative learning environment,鈥 said Bain. 鈥淭he design-build team looks forward to working side by side with UCR to create a new home for the School of Medicine that will be a focal point on campus and within the broader Riverside County community.鈥

鈥淲e have partnered with Hensel Phelps on other strategic pursuits for the University of California, and have highly refined the process to deliver exceptional buildings,鈥 James Simeo, principal at CO Architects and project design lead, said of the collaboration. 鈥淭he new, five-story facility will create a new home for the School of Medicine, prioritizing collaborative spaces for students, faculty, and staff.鈥

University personnel weighed in on the value of the Education Building II project, and also praised the joint venture of the two construction firms, which is being labeled 鈥淗ensel Phelps + CO Architects.鈥

鈥淚 would like to thank the UC Regents for their approval of this project, which will give us the space we need to grow our class sizes to 125 students per year and continue to fulfill the mission of increasing the number of physicians in the underserved inland Southern California,鈥 Dr. Deborah Deas, vice chancellor of health sciences and the Mark and Pam Rubin Dean of the UCR School of Medicine, said of the collaboration. 鈥淭here is so much to be excited about.鈥

Construction is due to kick off this summer, and Bain anticipates UCR School of Medicine鈥檚 Education Building II鈥檚 will be completed sometime in the middle of 2023.

UCR鈥檚 medical school first opened in 2013. In addition to its doctorate in medicine, the school offers concentrations in biomedical sciences, general surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry and cardiovascular medicine.

SAN ANTONIO — 糖心少女 attends various trade shows throughout the country in order to deliver news straight to those involved in the industry. At these events we are able to meet up with colleagues and introduce ourselves to new faces in the crowd. These past two weeks we have been on the road — from Texas to California — and wanted to give our readers a glimpse of our travels.

Our first stop was the Council for Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI), in San Antonio, Texas. The trade show floor was filled with impressive displays, including the highly anticipated and talked about “classrooms of the future.” The four classrooms of the future featured innovative technology and equipment that those at the show could see and experience first hand. Students from neighboring districts were also invited to demonstrate how the technology could be implemented in the classroom by participating in guided lessons. The classrooms featured everything from smartboards, flexible furniture, video conferencing systems, and more. 糖心少女 will be giving a more in-depth look at the classrooms in the November/December issue of the magazine.

We were also introduced to many new products including Shaw Contract Group’s LokDots, which help to install carpet tiles even in high moisture or occupied space. Wanda Dunaway, director of education and government markets for Shaw, demonstrated the fast, easy and efficient delivery of LokDots for us at CEFPI. Steelcase Education Solutions also gave us a tour of their new innovative furniture that was on display in a classroom of the future model as well.

After meeting with clients and new friends at CEFPI, we flew to Pasadena, Calif., where we attended the Green California Schools Summit. While the weather was warm, the show floor was full of “cool” technology to save schools money on electricity bills, including our tradeshow neighbor, Jeanne Knobbe with IGSHPA, showing us how geothermal systems are utilized in school environments.

The Green California Schools Summit featured breakout sessions throughout the two-day show, including meetings specifically for K-12 and for college/universities. 糖心少女 attended several sessions and received valuable information on school construction trends, projects, challenges and triumphs. Many of the sessions focused on schools going beyond the necessary energy-efficient requirements put in place by some institutions. Instead of pursuing the minimum energy-efficient requirements, many schools are raising the bar and pursuing net-zero energy.

Some of the projects discussed in the sessions will be featured in 糖心少女’ first issue in 2013 that focuses on green schools.

After absorbing all the knowledge from CEFPI and the Green California Schools Summit, we are back in the office until November — when we head down the street to tour the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in San Francisco.
