DARTMOUTH, N.H.鈥擠artmouth College is planning to expand and modernize its Hopkins Center for the Arts, known around campus as 鈥渢he Hop.鈥

The Hop is located on the campus鈥檚 Green and serves as the gateway to the campus鈥檚 Arts District. New areas of the Hop will entail performance and practice spaces, digital and broadcasting capabilities, interactive teaching elements, and musical production space.

Architecture firm Sn酶hetta was tasked with respecting the original design by Wallace K. Harrison while simultaneously upgrading the building. Accordingly, Sn酶hetta鈥檚 design entailed extending the Hop鈥檚 reach such that the new elements blend in with the surrounding campus and the classic feel of this New England town. Sn酶hetta is applying what the firm calls a 鈥渃ombination of the rugged and refined鈥 so the Hop honors both the manmade elements of the campus as well as the surrounding mountains. The architects are working so that the external plaza makes use of the building鈥檚 鈥済racious curves鈥 so as to more naturally move people as they approach the structure. The plaza will also serve as an outdoor meeting space.

Inside, the new lobby, called the Forum, is meant to act as a communal space for people to gather before and after various performances. A stairwell in the Forum links it to the second-floor Recital Hall and Performance Lab. Sn酶hetta designed the Recital Hall to resemble a glass-enclosed lantern, and it offers external views of the nearby campus buildings thanks to its 鈥渃urved mullion system鈥 in place. Sn酶hetta is also renovating the Hop鈥檚 900-seat theater, Spaulding Auditorium, as well as Top of the Hop, a rooftop space used by students and faculty alike.

Sn酶hetta is working with construction manager Consigli on the renovation, which is projected to commence later this year and be completed sometime in 2025.聽 The Hop will remain open as the renovations are underway.

Craig Dykers, a founding partner of Sn酶hetta, said that the audiences are as much a part of the creative process as artists themselves, and therefore it was crucial to join them together as one in the Hop鈥檚 performance spaces.

鈥淲e are excited to expand the Hop鈥檚 pioneering legacy as a venue for emerging forms of artistic collaboration and creative expression by bringing new rehearsal and production spaces to the building, ensuring continued support for a variety of perspectives and ways of making,鈥 he said.

In a subsequent statement emailed to 糖心少女, Sn酶hetta said that it was crucial to bring the Hop, a revered Dartmouth mainstay, into the 21st century.

鈥淕athering in-person to experience and learn about the Arts is fundamental to enjoying life and especially meaningful in the context of all the difficulties the world is facing right now,鈥 their statement said. 鈥淭he revitalized Hop will advance Dartmouth鈥檚 mission and enhance opportunities for artistic exploration and growth, inspiring students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors from around the world.鈥

The email continued: 鈥淎dding onto an existing building is always a challenge, given unknowns and deciding how to best allocate project resources, but the original design and spirit of the Hop are strong and provide a robust foundation for the Hop to continue to thrive.鈥

HANOVER, N.H.鈥擶ith a completion date slated for this month the new Dartmouth College Dana Hall renovation in Hanover is targeted for LEED Gold certification.

This $25 million project reuses and adds to a vacant library in the heart of the medical school quad, that will transform it into a vibrant faculty center.

Leers Weinzapfel Architects is the architect on this impressive project and Windover Construction is the construction manager.

Located at the heart of 1960s medical school buildings on the school鈥檚 siloed north campus, the 32,995-square-foot Dana Hall project 鈥 as well as new entrances for its surrounding buildings, a wide pedestrian bridge, and new circulation between buildings 鈥 is transforming the college鈥檚 least compelling area into a well-scaled, inviting north quad. The initiative will generate an accessible, seamless link between north campus and the historic green and main campus, allowing it to be shared with undergraduate sciences.

The demolition of an unused laboratory adjacent to Dana Hall made way for its new addition, which reorients the building to create inviting campus connections to the south. Comprising the new social center of north campus, the addition houses the building鈥檚 lobby and a caf茅, with an adjacent terrace overlooking a green.

Tied together by a spiral object stair visible from the south lawn,聽the building鈥檚 upper floors contain faculty offices, classrooms, and places for student gathering. The penthouse level features a solar-paneled canopy and a south-facing planted terrace that overlooks the iconic main campus. The walkout graduate student lounge in the basement opens to a protected courtyard below a pedestrian bridge.

Existing hazardous materials in Dana Hall required removing the interior down to its concrete columns and slabs before construction could begin.

As a reused structure in a cold climate, the choices of high R value terra-cotta-clad walls, solar panel canopy triple-glazed windows, and south-facing glass with an expanded metal interlayer to limit summer sun 鈥 along with reusing the existing concrete structure 鈥 create a building with a low embodied energy that approaches net zero energy usage.
