KINGSTON, R.I. 鈥� The University of Rhode Island (URI) is moving through a wide-ranging summer construction program that includes academic, athletic, housing, research and infrastructure projects across its campuses.听

According to 听close to 40 projects are expected to be completed before the 2026-27 academic year, according to URI鈥檚 Facilities Group. Among the most visible is the renovation of the 58-year-old Fine Arts Center in Kingston. The $99 million project includes a new 71,000-square-foot, three-story academic building with a theater lobby, art gallery, digital art and media areas, recording studios and modern classrooms. A ribbon-cutting is scheduled for Sept. 14.听

Athletics projects are also reshaping the Kingston Campus. Work on a new outdoor track and field complex is nearing completion as part of an $83 million overhaul of on-campus athletic facilities. The complex includes a nine-lane track, jumping runways, a separate throwing facility, a digital听scoreboard听and a grandstand with an accessible lift to a new press box.听

At Meade Stadium, crews are building the foundation for a new east grandstand and press box. The $42 million renovation is expected to be completed by fall 2027 and will add seating, an elevator-accessible press box, food-truck听space听and a new plaza entrance. URI football will play its 2026 home schedule at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket while construction continues.听

Housing expansion is underway along Flagg Road through a public-private partnership with Gilbane. The project includes two new residence halls and reconstruction of the Graduate Village Apartments. One residence hall is scheduled to open in fall 2027, and the three new residential facilities are expected to add more than 1,100 beds to the Kingston Campus by fall 2028.听

URI is also investing听at听its Narragansett Bay Campus. The new 32,000-square-foot Ocean Robotics Laboratory is complete and occupied, while the former Sheets Building has been demolished to make way for a new ocean engineering building with a large wave tank. Construction is also beginning on the Ocean Frontiers Building, which will replace听Horn听Laboratory with modern research labs.听

Additional听summer work includes dining hall renovations, roof replacements, HVAC upgrades, elevator improvements, structural repairs at the Steam Plant, wireless fire alarm installation and sidewalk and accessibility improvements.听Farm House听Road on the Kingston Campus will remain closed through听September听while underground steam pipeline work continues.

The University of Missouri鈥揔ansas City continues advancing several major construction and renovation projects across campus, with work underway on academic, student-support and administrative facilities tied to the university鈥檚 strategic goals.

Current projects include the Healthcare Delivery and Innovation Building at 25th and Charlotte听streets听and renovations to the Atterbury Student Success Center.听Additional听projects expected to begin construction this year include the expansion of the Conservatory鈥檚 Olson Performing Arts Center and renovations to the UMKC Administrative Center.听听

Healthcare Delivery and Innovation Building听

The 160,000-square-foot Healthcare Delivery and Innovation Building听remains听the largest capital improvement project in UMKC history.听听

According to the university, the project reached a major听milestone听Sept. 17 when crews placed the final structural beam after a signing ceremony involving elected officials, university leadership, students,听faculty听and staff.听听

Construction crews are continuing interior and exterior work throughout the facility. Interior wall framing is progressing, while drywall installation, piping insulation and overhead听mechanical,听electrical, plumbing and fire-protection systems continue advancing. Exterior work includes completion of penthouse metal panels, curtain wall installation,听roofing听and remaining fire-hydrant connections.听听

The building is expected to open in 2027.听听

Atterbury Student Success Center听

Renovations at the Atterbury Student Success Center began in May 2025 and are expected to conclude in summer 2026.听听

The university reported that walls and ceilings are听nearly fully听installed, while carpet installation, painting and finish work are underway. Construction at the building鈥檚 north entry is expected to continue into the first part of summer.听听

Once complete, the renovated facility will house Admissions, the UMKC School of Graduate Studies, the Center for Transfer Students and Adult Learners, Roo Advising, Career Services, University听College听and International Student Affairs. Plans also include a Welcome Center with a two-story atrium intended to host prospective students and their families.听听

Career Services programming will also expand to include a Professional Wardrobe Studio, providing students with access to professional clothing options and interview headshots. UMKC Central and the Financial Wellness Center will听relocate听from the Administrative Center into the renovated building as part of the project.听听

Olson Performing Arts Center Expansion听

UMKC Chancellor Mauli Agrawal announced during the 2025 State of the University that the Olson Performing Arts Center expansion is expected to break ground in 2026.听听

The 35,000-square-foot addition will add performance and rehearsal spaces on the east side of the building extending toward Volker Boulevard.听听

University officials said the project will increase performance, classroom and collaboration opportunities for students and the Kansas City community. The first phase of construction is estimated at $35 million and includes a large music ensemble performance and rehearsal space, two dance rehearsal rooms, support space for the dance program and a new accessible black box performance venue.听听

According to the university, the black box addition will help create a 鈥渢heatre district鈥� alongside White Recital Hall, Spencer听Theatre听and the McIlrath Lobby.听听

The second phase will renovate existing facilities, including White Recital Hall, to create听additional听classroom and theatre space as well as expanded student collaboration areas.听

UMKC Administrative Center Renovation听

Renovations to the UMKC Administrative Center are expected to begin in late spring and conclude in winter 2027.听听

The project will focus on the building鈥檚 front exterior and first floor, including accessibility improvements such as removing stairs in the entryway and lobby and adding accessible parking spaces.听听

Interior renovations include a refreshed lobby and new reception desk. As part of the changes, UMKC Central will听relocate听to the Atterbury Student Success Center, while its former Administrative Center space will become an alumni reception area and office suite for the UMKC Foundation.听听

PHOENIX 鈥� Arizona State University is lining up a mix of new builds and renovations in 2026 that university officials say will expand health education capacity, improve student听facilities听and modernize older听academic听and athletics spaces.听

Two of the year鈥檚 most prominent projects include a new ASU Health building in downtown Phoenix and the John S. McCain III Library and Museum in Tempe, alongside student-facing upgrades on the Polytechnic and Tempe campuses.听

Construction for the ASU Health building is expected to begin in July and finish before the start of the听fall 2028听semester. The 200,000-square-foot facility in downtown Phoenix is planned to house the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering, the Health Observatory at ASU and the School of Technology for Public Health, according to the university.听

The project budget is about $200 million for construction and equipment, according to Tim Smith, vice president for facilities development management at ASU. 鈥淭he unique thing about ASU Health is that the med school of the future is not defined.听So听we’re听trying to define that as the train is moving and the tracks are being laid,鈥� he said, according to听.听

Smith also pointed to technology-enabled instruction as a differentiator for the new program. 鈥淎 lot of it will be tech driven. The augmented reality, virtual听reality听and ways that our students will learn are not the way that most traditional med schools have approached it,鈥� he said, according to听.听

The ASU Health project is paired with an $8 million renovation of the Mercado building on the Downtown Phoenix campus, which the university said will temporarily house ASU Health until the new building opens.听

In Tempe, ASU is also planning the John S. McCain III Library and Museum, dedicated to the legacy of the late U.S. senator and Navy veteran. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held in January, and construction on the $187 million project is expected to begin in late spring and finish in fall 2028.听The planned 80,000-square-foot building is set to include an immersive museum, a library, a caf茅, a lecture hall, event space and multipurpose areas for the university and the community.听

On the Polytechnic campus, ASU plans to renovate and expand the Student Union,听roughly doubling听its size. The $66 million effort includes renovating dining and bookstore space and adding lounges,听classrooms听and meeting rooms for student organizations. Work is scheduled to begin this summer and finish next summer.听

ASU also highlighted plans for its first 3D-printed structure: a 1,200-square-foot shade-and-market building next to the ISTB 12 facility that would serve people waiting at the campus shuttle stop. The university said the project is a collaboration with Aramark, ASU鈥檚 dining services provider, and does not yet have a timeline.听

Additional听projects outlined include phased modernization of the Bateman Physical Sciences Center H-wing 鈥斕齛听$115 million effort expected to continue through summer 2028 鈥� and a multiphase, three-year renovation at Desert Financial Arena with completion targeted for December 2029.听

Inside the 600,000 square foot high school, K-8 and early learning center expansion project听

The developer that created the vision for Florida’s Friendliest Hometown, The Villages, expanded its vision for Central Florida by creating a new community for a younger population called Middleton. Within this new community are three new campuses for The Villages Charter School (TVCS), created specifically for children of qualified employees of The Villages and employment partners. The new campuses include a high school, a K-8 school, an early learning center and a state-of-the-art athletic facility to accommodate the children of this expanding employee base.听听

Growing Educational Needs听听

TVCS, established in 2000, is a shining example of public charter school success in Florida, earning 19 consecutive “A” grades from the Florida Department of Education and the “Cognia School and Systems of Distinction” award.听

When TVCS needed additional capacity due to an expanding student base, it sought a designer team that could capture its vision, meet the school鈥檚 opening deadlines, and design three distinct campuses that fit within the constraints of a new master-planned community. Construction on the final campus components was completed in December 2024.听

The Project Team听

Constructing the extensive project within a community that was also under construction presented a challenge, intensified by the critical need to coordinate with the construction teams for everything from roadways and utilities to residential and community spaces. In addition, TVCS Middleton campus required a focus on student-centered design, sustainability, storm resilience, state-of-the-art features and outdoor learning spaces. As part of this effort, Matern Professional Engineering of Maitland, Fla.鈥攚hich managed mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire-protection building systems for the project鈥攁nd architect Schenkel Shultz of Winter Park, Fla., collaborated with The Villages developer and other design and construction partners to create the campuses.听听

Led by Schenkel Shultz, the design team envisioned an educational environment that respected the master plan of Middleton while simultaneously planning for TVCS鈥� growth for decades to come. Matern Professional Engineering prioritized safety, functionality, and resiliency in designing the building systems to ensure lasting functionality.听听

A Cutting-Edge Campus听听

Inspired by collegiate campuses, the new charter high school epitomizes 21st century learning. Spanning 383,961 square feet, the school includes advanced classrooms, career and technical education programs, cutting-edge technology, flexible learning spaces, and STEM labs tailored for science, business, banking administration, construction, engineering, theater and dance.听听听

Positioned as a pivotal anchor, the three seamlessly connected campuses create a strong sense of community and a path toward knowledge. The second-story Media Center takes in broad views of the adjacent town center, while incorporating state-of-the-art technology and furniture that caters to college-bound students. The school鈥檚 Performing Arts Academy is home to the Tracy Performing Arts Center and the Encore at The Tracy Theater, where both students and community members can enjoy the arts.听听

The Athletic Complex serves as a shared space, offering a main gym, annex courts, a wrestling room and a weight room. The campus also features an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a 4,000-seat football stadium, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, practice fields and a golf putting green. Inside the facility is a main arena with seating for 1,200 guests and two full-length basketball courts, along with an auxiliary gym that can seat 1,100 and accommodate four additional courts. The facility provides an elevated and inclusive environment for athletic events and competitions statewide. Local, state, and national teams utilize the collegiate-grade athletic facilities throughout the seasons, making the campus an athletic destination for Central Florida.听听

Modern K-8 Facilities听听

In addition to the high school, a compact K-8 school incorporates adaptive and community-centric spaces. The 247,946-square-foot school鈥檚 design thoughtfully integrates with the regional surroundings, while fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity, warmth and community-based learning. At the heart of the school lies a cutting-edge hub designed to foster collaboration, with a special emphasis on the liberal arts. This dynamic outdoor space is divided into three distinct areas: Discovery, encouraging exploration and the expansion of knowledge; Collaborative, where teamwork and cooperation thrive; and Fun, celebrating creativity and enjoyment. A multi-functional courtyard is designed to accommodate outdoor dining and community events.听听听

Five vertical light wells and custom graphics that evolve in sophistication as students move from elementary to middle school enhance the campus. Meanwhile, learning is enhanced by integrating technology in both indoor and outdoor settings, as each classroom is equipped with computers and interactive projector screens to create a dynamic, interactive learning environment. The gymnasium features three full-size courts, allowing for grade separation during athletic events, and includes an elevated stage for performances. With outdoor food-to-table learning gardens and abundant natural daylight, the design prioritizes energy efficiency and locally sourced materials. Low-VOC specifications further contribute to the sustainable ethos of the building.听

The University of Texas at Arlington鈥攁 public research university in the growing Dallas-Fort Worth area鈥攈as a student body of more than 41,000, making it the second-largest institution in the University of Texas System. Located in west Fort Worth, UTA West will focus on meeting future educational needs and fostering economic development in the fast-growing region.

The project team was announced on April 18 and was selected through a competitive process. HKS鈥� and Hensel Phelps鈥� focus on sustainable, innovative design and construction were well-aligned with UTA鈥檚 mission to create spaces that empower students and strengthen community connections, according to a statement by the university.

John Hall, UTA vice president for administration and economic development, noted in a statement that it was important that the university appoint a design-build team that would respect the natural beauty of the site, establish design standards that would guide future development, and bring proven experience to successfully execute the program and construction documents.

鈥淗KS and Hensel Phelps is certainly that team,鈥� Hall said.

Work on Phase I will begin soon, focusing on developing a primary identity for the campus driven by a landmark building and public space that embraces the surrounding natural environment.

A ceremonial groundbreaking for the new campus took place on April 3, and infrastructure installation will begin later this year. More significant development will commence in 2026, and the new campus should welcome its first students as early as fall 2028 and will eventually aim to serve more than 10,000 students.
