HAXTUN, Colo. 鈥� Haxtun School District RE-2J has begun construction on a renovation and addition project designed to unify its prekindergarten through 12th-grade campus and update learning spaces.听听

District officials, staff,听students听and community members gathered May 13 for a groundbreaking ceremony following several years of planning and a funding package built on a successful bond election and a BEST grant award in May 2025.听听

Superintendent Aron Jones said the project is intended to create a more connected campus that supports student learning and collaboration.听听

鈥淥ur goal has always been to provide the best possible learning environment for our students,鈥� said Superintendent Aron Jones. 鈥淏y bringing our students and programs together in a more organized, connected environment, we鈥檙e creating a school that better supports learning, collaboration and day-to-day success.鈥�听

The project scope includes reshaping spaces that district officials said have been fragmented by multiple additions over time. Early childhood and kindergarten classrooms will be听consolidated听with improved access to playgrounds, while special education and sensory spaces will be grouped together.听听

The redesigned campus will improve wayfinding and strengthen connections between grade levels while creating dedicated spaces for early childhood education, special听education听补苍诲听sensory-support听programs. The project also prioritizes safety through a more secure main entry sequence and improved organization of high-activity spaces such as athletics and physical education.听听

A significant feature of the project includes repurposing the existing elementary gym into a centralized cafeteria serving the entire PK-12 population. In addition, the district will construct a new auxiliary gym with expanded seating and improved access to locker rooms and outdoor athletic facilities.听听

Career and technical education听is听another focus. The district plans to replace its 1956 vocational agriculture building with a new facility intended for agricultural mechanics, welding, animal听science听and crop science programs.听听

Construction is expected to conclude in July 2027.听Wold听Architects and Engineers partnered with Bryan Construction and owner鈥檚 representative NV5 to design and deliver the project, which will听consolidate听previously fragmented facilities into a more connected and student-centered campus.听

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. 鈥� The Colorado Springs School District 11 recently welcomed students back to Jenkins Middle School following major renovations that prioritized student safety, enhanced learning environments and long-term investment in educational infrastructure.

The work was completed in collaboration with Bryan Construction and CRP Architects and with oversight from the Colorado State Fire Inspectors, Colorado Springs Fire Department and Pikes Peak Regional Building Department to create a safe, functional and inspiring place to learn.

鈥淭he transformation of Jenkins Middle School reflects our unwavering commitment to providing safe, inspiring spaces where students can thrive,鈥� said Michael Gaal, Superintendent of The Colorado Springs School District 11. 鈥淭his project is more than bricks and mortar 鈥� it鈥檚 an investment in our students鈥� futures, our educators鈥� success and the community we serve.鈥�

The project included addressing structural needs as well as improving the campus layout and instructional spaces. Key components of the project include:

• Installation of new modular classrooms, known as 鈥淐lass Cubes,鈥� fully equipped with furniture and technology for immediate use
• Upgrades to the main corridor and other high-traffic areas
• A refreshed and re-equipped sixth grade wing, ready for the incoming class
• Progress on the Media Center, including new structural foundations (micropiles)
• Demolition of the seventh and eighth grade wings, preparing the site for future next generation learning spaces

“We are honored to contribute to a project that positively impacts the students, staff and community of Jenkins Middle School,鈥� said Doug Woody, Vice President of Bryan Construction. 鈥淲e take pride in our ability to respond effectively during emergencies and to reopen the school before the 2025-26 academic year. The successful coordination, communication and relationships with District 11 and all relevant governmental jurisdictions were crucial to this expedited timeline.”

To maintain safety during construction, the district implemented new traffic and parking patterns, ensuring no vehicles cross in front of the Class Cubes. The Colorado Springs Fire Department was instrumental in working with District 11 and Jenkins Middle School staff to ensure safety for all students, staff and visitors.

鈥淢y team and I are responsible for protecting students from fire hazards,鈥� said Fire Marshal Kris Cooper. 鈥淒ue to identified impairments to structural and fire protection features, CSFD, in cooperation with Pikes Peak Regional Building Department and the state of Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, made the decision to evacuate the school in January of this year. I’m pleased to announce that, as of Friday, Aug. 9, Jenkins Middle School is approved for reoccupation. The necessary improvements have been made, ensuring the occupiable portions of the building are now safe for students and staff.鈥�

The bulk of the renovation is complete and ready for students, with some areas, such as final plumbing installation and structural slab work in the Media Center, to continue behind secure construction zones. Portable classrooms are in place temporarily and will be phased out as permanent facilities are completed.

鈥淭his project is about more than repairs 鈥� it鈥檚 about giving Jenkins students a fresh start,鈥� said Brian Risley, Principal Architect of CRP Architects. 鈥淔rom vibrant new finishes in the classroom wing to a safer, more functional layout, every detail was designed to welcome students back after a year away. Even as demolition and preparation for the new addition continue, careful separation of construction areas ensures learning can happen safely in an environment full of new energy and possibility.鈥�
