Florida Solar Power Grant Targets Schools
COCOA, Fla. – The University of Central Florida solar energy research center received a $10 million state to install solar energy panels on 90 K-12 Florida schools that double as emergency shelters.
State officials awarded the funds from $126 million that Florida was provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to invest in alternative energy projects.

WASHINGTON – The nation’s leading organizations in building-code development and energy and lighting engineering announced the launch of the first nationwide standard set of green building codes, the International Green Construction Code Public Version 1.0.
The green building code system, which conforms to existing International Code Council codes, was designed to give professionals in the construction industry a standard method of developing high-performance green commercial buildings.

OLYMPIA, Wash. – A survey produced by the state’s Employment Security Department identified 99,319 green jobs in Washington in 2009, about 3.3 percent of the state’s work force.
The survey, released in March, suggests green jobs grew by 33 percent, or 15,100 positions, for companies that were surveyed in 2008 and again in 2009.
“If Washington can see this kind of shift to green jobs during a recession, just think what will happen as our economy recovers,” says Gov. Chris Gregoire.

HILLSBORO, Ore. – The 600-student K-6 Rosedale Elementary School achieved LEED Gold certification in March, making it the first LEED-certified school in the Hillsboro School District.
The $15.9 million school was completed last fall and uses the latest in energy efficient features to save 30 to 50 percent of energy per year compared with an equivalent-sized school building without efficiency enhancements. The two-story, 74,100-square-foot facility saves the district close to $28,000 per a year in energy costs.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The new Washington-Lee High School, a public school in Arlington County, recently received LEED Gold certification — the second public school project in the state to do so.
McDonough Bolyard Peck Inc. of Fairfax, Va., provided construction management for the $85 million replacement. Grimm + Parker Architects of McLean, Va., provided design services, and Hess Construction Co. was the contractor.
