Pa. Schools to Receive $325.5 Million for Projects

WORMLEYSBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania State Public School Building Authority, a state agency that assists school districts and community colleges in obtaining financing, is selling $325.5 million in taxable qualified school construction bonds, representing the largest bond deal the program has made since it started up last year.
 
The bonds, which will be released Sept. 30, will support renovations and building projects at 46 districts statewide.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Officials at the University of Iowa moved ahead with the application for a $100 million federal grant that would fund the construction of a new children’s hospital there.
 
Tom Moore, spokesman for the university, says the grant would pay a major portion of the costs for the hospital.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio School Facilities Commission recently approved contracts for more than $249 million in school construction and renovation work at 42 school districts.
 
The projects will support an estimated 2,270 jobs, according to commission reports.

District Starts $86 Million Construction Plan

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The Carlsbad Unified School District started construction of 11 new educational buildings at Carlsbad High School, part of an $86 million building plan.
 
With an office in nearby San Diego, McCarthy Building Co. is the contractor on the CHS renovation project, which will add 99,000 square feet of space for classrooms, a vocational education lab, food services, and a performing arts area to the school. Perkins+Will of San Diego is the project’s design architect.

Study: Green Offices are More Productive

EAST LANSING, Mich. — A new study released by Michigan State University draws an evidence-based connection between environmentally friendly offices buildings and the productivity of office staff.
 
Titled “Effects of Green Buildings on Employee Health and Productivity,” the study examined two cases in the Lansing area where workers moved from a conventional office building to an environmentally friendly green facility. Workers claimed they called in sick less often and were more productive in the new sustainable environment.
